Hair loss and/or thinning hair is a problem that affects both men and women. While some people are not bothered by this condition there are many others who feel that it hinders their self confidence and there-by their quality of life.
It is important to understand how the body produces healthy hair. The scalp is composed of 3 basic layers of skin; The Epidermis – The Dermis – and The Subcutaneous Layers. Within these three layers of skin are blood vessels, nerves, muscles, glands, millions of cells, and of course, the hair. The hair like any other part of the body is supported by the blood. As the blood brings oxygen and nutrients into the papilla area it promotes cellular activity for the hair, and as these cells reproduce, they build a flexible substance called Keratin (hair). As the hair grows in the follicle, it is then lubricated by the sebaceous gland that secretes oil in the follicle, which coats the hair for smooth growth and provides luster and sheen.
There are many causes for hair loss; heading the list is Male Pattern Baldness. This problem affects over 40% of the adult male population and thousands of women. Other causes include, androgenetic alopecia, auto immune diseases, connective tissue disease, exposure to toxic chemicals, certain prescription drugs that cause hair loss, certain diseases, prolonged illness, radiation treatments, hormonal imbalances, stress, poor nutrition, sebaceous oil build-up and slow cellular activity.
Male Pattern Baldness is a result of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Testosterone is converted to DHT by 5 Alpha Reductase Enzyme. DHT attaches to the androgen receptors of the hair follicle causing increased hair loss and gradually miniaturizing the hair follicle. This miniaturized hair follicle eventually dies and hair loss occurs.
Stress is another contributor and cause of hair loss. While under stress, the pituitary gland can produce hormones and enzymes that can constrict the vascular system, thus hindering the oxygen, nutrients, and blood flow to the hair. It is very important to bring stress levels under control to stop it as a cause of hair loss.
Probably the most talked about cause of hair loss is Sebaceous Oil Build-up - referred to by many as sebum plug. The function of the sebaceous gland is to supply oil (sebum) to the hair follicle, which lubricates the hair for smooth growth. The problem occurs when thin, poor quality hair is being produced in the follicle. If the hair is not in its proper condition, oil fills up in the follicle, hardens, and can hinder proper hair growth.
There are several options available to deal with hair loss. It’s best to educate yourself prior to choosing which one is right for you. Here is a quick look at the choices and their relative costs. Hair clubs generally suggest that clients shave their heads and then be fitted with a custom hairpiece for a cost of $3,000 to $8,000 a year. You may also want to research hair transplants. Keep in mind that it is surgery and can be painful. You can expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 to $10,000 per transplant and may require up to four transplants. You may also be familiar with products like Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Finasteride (Propecia). While some people have had success with these products others have not. Minoxidil, which is meant to dilate the blood vessels providing more blood flow to the follicle and hair shaft, can only work below the dermal layer. If the scalp is unhealthy and the hair follicles are clogged, the Minoxidil sits on the surface irritating the scalp and preventing it from reaching the root where it can work effectively. Finasteride works best early in the hair loss cycle, cannot be taken by women and can have unpleasant side effects for men. Today’s best treatments for the re-growth of hair are multi-faceted and include low level laser therapy (LLLT).
In February 2007, the FDA found that the technology in LLLT was not only safe but was able to effectively re-grow hair in 94% of the people involved in the study. In a study with Finasteride (also FDA approved to re-grow hair) and LLLT, the Finasteride grew 54 new hairs per square inch and the LLLT grew 135 new hairs per square inch.
Laser treatments are beneficial for all hair types by increasing the blood flow by 54%. It works in varying degrees on everyone, from slowing, arresting or reversing hair loss to increasing the shine, body and elasticity of hair. LLLT works on all areas of the scalp: front, top, back, and sides. Laser is recommended for either men or women who are in the early stages of hair loss or who demonstrate sufficient hair follicles capable of being rehabilitated by the laser hair therapy program. Usually noticeable improvement is achieved in 3 to 6 months. However, if you have heavy hair fall-out, you may notice a reduced rate of fall-out after only a few treatments. Results vary per individual, and compliance is necessary to achieve the best results. To maintain a healthy head of hair, especially if there is a history of baldness in your family, the sooner you start the better.
Laser light uses the scientific principle of photo biotherapy. This process occurs when cells absorb light and repair themselves. Laser light penetrates deep into the tissues of the scalp, stimulating micro-circulation of blood supply, cell metabolism and protein synthesizes.
